7TV emotes and name paints in your OBS chat
OBS can’t run the 7TV browser extension, so to show 7TV emotes in OBS you need a chat overlay that loads 7TV itself. Layrs’ Chat (7TV painted) source does: 7TV, BTTV and FFZ emotes, zero-width emotes, badges and 7TV name paints, in one Browser source.
Updated
Why OBS doesn’t show 7TV
7TV adds its emotes and paints to the chat you read in your browser or app. OBS’s Browser source runs no browser extensions, so a Twitch chat in OBS shows plain names and Twitch emotes only. The overlay has to fetch 7TV’s emotes and paints by itself.
Paints also depend on the viewer. 7TV says cosmetics “are only available to equip when the user has an active 7TV Subscription” (What are cosmetics on 7TV?), and subscribers get a new bundle of paints each month (What do I get with a 7TV subscription?). A viewer without one has no paint for any overlay to draw.
Add a 7TV chat to OBS
Pick the 7TV chat
Sign in to Layrs, click New source (on a new channel: Browse all sources on Home) and pick Chat (7TV painted). It starts with paints on and the Clean style.
Copy its link
Click Copy URL under the preview.
Click + under Sources
In OBS, pick the scene you stream from and click + at the bottom of the Sources list.
Pick Browser
Chat needs a Browser source, not Window Capture. Name it Chat and click OK.
Paste the link and set the size
Paste it into URL. Set Width to 450 and Height to 700, then OK.
Place it and lock it
Drag it where you want it, then click the padlock so it stays put.
No account? The free Twitch chat overlay shows 7TV emotes and paints too, without signing in: type your channel, pick a style and copy the link. It’s Twitch only, and its settings live in the link.
What shows up
- Emotes: Twitch emotes plus the channel’s and the global 7TV, BTTV and FFZ emotes. Among 7TV, BTTV and FFZ emotes with the same name, the channel’s 7TV one wins.
- Zero-width emotes: 7TV zero-width emotes, and BTTV overlay emotes like SoSnowy and TopHat, stack on the emote right before them.
- Personal emotes: the emotes 7TV subscribers use in their own messages. Switch 7TV personal emotes off to hide them.
- Badges: Twitch, 7TV, BTTV, FFZ and Chatterino badges, as Images, Glyphs (simple colored Twitch badges) or Off. Chatterino badges also covers Chatterino Homies and Moltorino.
- Name paints: set 7TV paints to On, Light or Off. Viewers without a paint of their own can get a Name paint you pick.
- Moderation: in Twitch chat, messages your mods delete, and everything from someone who gets timed out or banned, leave the overlay too. Bans and timeouts clear Kick lines as well.
Very busy chat? Light keeps only the first shadow of each paint, so a screen full of painted names stays calm.
Kick chat in the same box
When your Layrs channel has Kick connected, Kick chat shows in the same chat source, marked with a K when it’s mixed with Twitch chat. Kick messages get the channel’s 7TV emotes and 7TV’s global ones. Layrs loads BTTV and FFZ emotes for Twitch chat only, and 7TV paints, 7TV badges and personal emotes are Twitch only too.
Make it readable
- Clean: no background, outlined text. The 7TV look, and what Chat (7TV painted) uses.
- Bubbles: soft rounded bubbles, with the name above the message.
- Plain: name and message on one line, no background.
- Cards: full-width cards with a colored edge per viewer.
On a bright game, raise Outline on Clean. Make emotes bigger with Emote size, let old lines go with Fade out after, and keep Hide bots and Hide !commands on, as they are from the start.
Not showing 7TV?
- An emote shows as a word: it isn’t in the channel’s 7TV set or 7TV’s global set. Add it to the channel on 7TV. A new emote can take about 10 minutes to show, because Layrs keeps each channel’s emote sets for that long.
- Someone has no paint: they need an active 7TV subscription and a paint equipped, and 7TV paints must not be Off.
- A new paint doesn’t show yet: Layrs keeps each chatter’s 7TV paint and badge for 10 minutes and never holds chat back to look them up. A changed paint shows within about 10 minutes, and someone’s very first message can come without their paint.
- Nothing changes in OBS: double-click the Browser source and click Refresh cache of current page.
- No paint in Kick chat: that’s expected. Paints, 7TV badges and personal emotes are Twitch only for now.

FAQ
Why don’t 7TV emotes show in OBS?
OBS’s Browser source runs no browser extensions, and 7TV is one. Use a chat overlay that loads 7TV itself, like Layrs’ Chat (7TV painted).
Can OBS show 7TV name paints?
Yes, if the chat overlay draws them. Layrs does in Twitch chat: set 7TV paints to On, or Light for very busy chats.
Why can’t I see someone’s paint?
They need an active 7TV subscription and a paint equipped. A paint they just changed can take about 10 minutes to show.
Does it work with Kick?
Kick chat shows in the same overlay with the channel’s 7TV emotes and the global ones. 7TV paints, 7TV badges and personal emotes are Twitch only.
Do I need to sign in?
To make a Layrs chat source, yes, with Twitch or Kick. Layrs reads Twitch chat without your login. The free Twitch chat overlay needs no account at all.
Is it free?
Yes. The chat overlay and every other built-in widget in Layrs are free.
